Abstract: | The purpose of this application, made under Article 23.9.3 of the Code, is to conserve the family-group name Sphenopidae Hertwig, 1882 that is in widespread and current usage for a group that includes ecologically, medically and toxicologically important species. Sphenopidae Hertwig, 1882 is threatened by Palythoidae Duchassaing de Fombressin & Michelotti, 1860, which has only been used once as a valid name since 1899. |

The International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature has conserved the usage of the family-group name Sphenopidae Hertwig, 1882 for a group of brachyneminic zoantharians over its rarely-used senior subjective synonym Palythoidae Duchassaing de Fombressin & Michelotti, 1860.
