Steve Gaimari’s research is primarily focused on systematics of Diptera, with special emphasis on several acalyptrate families, as well as dabbling in a few non-acalyptrate fly groups.
Summary of Research & Education:
Steve received his Bachelor’s degree in Biology from Clark University (Worcester, Massachusetts) in 1990, then specialized in Entomology for his Master’s degree from Washington State University (Pullman) in 1993 and PhD from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1998. After a postdoctoral fellowship at the Smithsonian Institution, in 2001 he took a position as an Associate Insect Biosystematist at the Plant Pest Diagnostics Laboratory of the California Department of Food & Agriculture (Sacramento). During his tenure there, he was head of the Entomology Lab starting in 2006 until his retirement in 2023, also serving as head of the Botany Lab from 2009–2019 and the Nematology Lab from 2019–2023. In 2019 Steve incorporated the previously informal North American Dipterists Society (now Dipterists Society) as a USA non-profit, and currently serves as a member of its Board of Directors and as President. He also served as President of the American Association of Zoological Nomenclature (2013–2017) and as a Councilor of the International Congresses of Dipterology (since 2010). He has served on numerous editorial and scientific advisory boards, and as a subject editor for Zootaxa (2012–2025) and Annals of the Entomological Society of America (2002–2013), and as editor-in-chief of Fly Times (since 2007) and its Supplement series (since 2017).
