Paulo Lucinda's research is primarily focused on taxonomy and systematics of Neotropical freshwater fishes) with special emphasis on the fishes of the family Poeciliidae.

Summary of Research & Education:

Paulo gained his PhD (2003) in zoology from the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil). He is currently a professor as well as the curator of fishes at the Department of Biology, Universidade Federal do Tocantins, Brazil. His current scientific activities are strongly collections-based, in terms of research, teaching and administrative duties.  He has a considerable teaching load (both undergraduate and graduate) and at the same time, he is also in charge of the ichthyological collection at his institution. Since 1995 he has been working in undergraduate and graduate education, teaching regular courses on Zoological Nomenclature, Phylogenetic Systematics, Cladistic Biogeography, and Vertebrate Zoology (urochordates, cephalochordates and non-tetrapod craniates). In addition, he also conducts regular original research in the field of taxonomy and systematics of fishes. His main research interests focus on the systematics, biodiversity, and biogeography of the Poeciliidae. He also has side interests in other groups of fishes, mainly Neotropical freshwater fishes. Furthermore, he currently works as an editor for two ichthyological journals: Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters (since 2016) and Neotropical Ichthyology (since 2010).
