Dr. Bouchard is a systematist focusing primarily on the study of the diverse beetle families Curculionidae (weevils) and Tenebrionidae (darkling beetles). He has strong interests in the biology, development, relationships, biogeography and evolution of beetles in general. He enjoys collecting beetles in all types of ecosystems, from rainforests to deserts. Among his nomenclatural contributions are broad-scale treatments of family- and genus-group names in Coleoptera.
Summary of Research & Education:
In 2002 he completed a Ph.D. in Entomology at the University of Queensland, Australia, where he studied the systematics and biogeography of darkling beetles of the Australian Wet Tropics. After his dissertation, he returned to his native Canada where he was a Post-Doctoral Fellow for a short period. In 2003 he was hired in his current position as a Research Scientist in the Canadian National Collection of Insects, Arachnids and Nematodes in Ottawa.
He has served as a subject editor for The Canadian Entomologist (2011-2015), ZooKeys (2011-present) and Zoological Bibliography (2010-present). He has been an active supporter of the Entomological Society of Canada, for which he served as Treasurer for several years and he was recently elected as Second-Vice President (he will occupy the position of President in 2018-19). He has played various roles in other scientific societies (e.g., Entomological Society of Ontario, Biological Survey of Canada).
