Nesrine Akkari is a systematist who studies the taxonomy of myriapods (Diplopoda, Chilopoda) combining standard methods and modern approaches to describe species and address topics related to their morphology, taxonomy and phylogenetic relationships. She continuously publishes species descriptions and larger taxonomic revisions, where nomenclatural questions are routinely addressed and clarified. In her current research, she further highlights the importance of the natural history collections for taxonomic research and to answer biodiversity related questions. Nesrine Akkari’s interest in zoological nomenclature was rooted in her commitment to taxonomy, the epicentre of her interdisciplinary research, and has developed over her career as a taxonomist, and editor for several scientific journals publishing on the same topic
Summary of Research & Education:
Nesrine Akkari obtained her Ph.D. in 2010 in her native country Tunisia, at the Faculty of Sciences of Tunis, where she studied the taxonomy, diversity and ecology of Myriapods. After her dissertation, she moved to Denmark for four years as a postdoctoral researcher at the Natural History Museum of Denmark, University of Copenhagen to focus on the study of Julida (Diplopoda, Myriapoda). In May 2014, Nesrine Akkari was hired in her current position as the curator of the Myriapoda collection in the Natural history Museum Vienna, Austria. She is also a guest lecturer at the Department of Evolutionary Biology, University of Vienna.
Nesrine Akkari is currently the Editor-in-Chief of the Annalen des Naturhistorischen Museum in Wien (2018 – present) and a subject-editor for several other journals publishing on taxonomy, such as the European Journal of Taxonomy (2019- present), African Invertebrates and ZooKeys (2014-present). She is currently the vice-president of the International Society for Myriapodology.
