Grygier v2

Area of Taxonomic Interest: Crustacea, Myzostomida

Role: Term ended August 21, 2024

Elected: December 2006, see BZN 63 (4): 222–223.

Mark J. Grygier, an American citizen based in Taiwan, received his Ph.D. at Scripps Institution of Oceanography in 1984, having established himself as an authority on the parasitic crustacean group Ascothoracida with side interests in certain isopods, copepods, and barnacles. He then spent 13 years supported by fellowships and short-term appointments in many countries, pursuing research on 1) the phylogenetic relationships among maxillopodan crustaceans as revealed by comparative morphology and ontogeny; and 2) associated and parasitic organisms of marine invertebrates. Along the way he took up the taxonomic study of, in particular, monstrilloid copepods and the Myzostomida. Entering the Lake Biwa Museum in 1997 to conduct biodiversity-related research and serve as an invertebrate curator, Dr. Grygier acclimated himself to freshwater by directing international collaborative projects on the large branchiopod crustaceans of ricefields and the parasitofauna of Lake Biwa. But he continues to be involved in life history research (eventually formal taxonomy, too, he hopes) of one more marine crustacean group, the Facetotecta or “y-larvae”.

Summary of Research & Education:

Dr. Grygier is a former secretary of the American Association for Zoological Nomenclature and he was on the subcommittee that produced the Japanese version of the Fourth Edition of the Code. He has long served as English editor for several Japanese journals, notably the taxonomic journal “Species Diversity”, which he has also advised concerning the Code. He is currently an associate editor of “Journal of Crustacean Biology” and a Research Associate at the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History and the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution.
