Luis Ceríaco’s research is primarily focused on taxonomy, systematics, phylogeny and evolution of terrestrial vertebrates (Reptilia, Amphibia, Mammalia), as well as the history of science and collections. He has ongoing projects on southwestern and western Africa, conducting faunal surveys on poorly known countries in terms of their biodiversity. He has authored more than 30 new vertebrate taxa and regularly supervises students on taxonomy and nomenclature projects in Europe and Africa. He oversees the curation of the zoology collections Natural History and Science Museum of the University of Porto and is the external curator of herpetology in the National Museum of Natural History of the University of Lisbon.
Summary of Research & Education:
Luis gained his BSc (2008) in Biology, MSc (2010) in Conservation Biology, and PhD (2014) in History and Philosophy of Science from the University of Évora, Portugal. After four years as a post-doctoral researcher in the California Academy of Sciences (2015), Florida Museum of Natural History (2016), Villanova University (2017) and University of Michigan-Dearborn (2018) studying the herpetofauna of southwestern Africa, Luis was appointed Head of Collections and Research at the Natural History and Science Museum of the University of Porto. He conducts research in the alpha-taxonomy of African vertebrates, especially focusing on reptiles, amphibians and small mammals.
