Daniel Whitmore’s research focuses on the taxonomy and systematics of Sarcophagidae (Diptera), particularly on the Palearctic and Afrotropical faunas. Besides his taxonomic and nomenclatural work, in recent years he has become interested in creating links between taxonomic expertise and citizen science, by leading initiatives such as the UK Sarcophagidae Recording Scheme. Daniel’s interest in zoological nomenclature was kindled by his revisionary studies on Sarcophaga (Heteronychia) and has developed over his career as a taxonomist and editor for several taxonomic outlets.
Summary of Research & Education:
Daniel obtained a Ph.D. in Zoology at Sapienza University of Rome (Italy) in 2011. From 2003 to 2012 he worked as a taxonomist and scientific editor for the Biodiversity Unit of the Italian Forestry Service. In 2012–2013 he was a post-doctoral fellow at the Natural History Museum of Denmark (Copenhagen). In 2013–2017 he was Curator then Senior Curator at the Natural History Museum in London (UK). Since 2018 he is a Research Curator at the State Museum of Natural History in Stuttgart (Germany). He has been a subject editor for the journals Zootaxa, ZooKeys, and Biodiversity Data Journal (2014–2021) and is Editor-in-Chief of Thomas Say Publications in Entomology (2020–2023) and Integrative Systematics (2021–ongoing).
