Henry Barlow was born and educated in UK, qualifying as a Chartered Accountant in 1969. In 1970 he took up residence in Malaysia and since then has been involved in managing estate companies (mainly now palm oil) in both Malaysia and Indonesia.
He served for 25 years as Hon. Treasurer of the Malaysian Nature Society, in the course of which he saw through press a number of publications of a taxonomic nature. Over the last 30 years he has also been responsible for the publishing and distribution of the almost complete 18 part work The Moths of Borneo by Dr J D Holloway.
Currently he is an independent non-executive director of Sime Darby Berhad, and HSBC Bank Malaysia Berhad.
He is also Chairman of the Biodiversity Technical Committee of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil.
